After a really agonizing auction for UK rights, where there was so much enthusiasm one simply wanted all the publishers to buy it, David Fickling of David Fickling Books has acquired rights in Andy Mulligan's new novel TRASH. In the US (whre he publishes under the Random House umbrella as he does here) he has made a pre-emptive bid and the book will come out simultaneously in the US and US in autumn 2010.
Rights have already been sold in Spain and Finland and auctions are currently going on across Europe.
The worldwide enthusiasm for this incredible novel - aimed at 12+ age group but, as David Fickling describes it, an 'all read', is thrilling. It will undoubtedly be the childrens' book of the season and will catapult Andy into the premier league of childrens' authors.
TRASH is publishing gold dust. It is a thrilling adventure story that can be read at one long sitting, beautifully written, with unforgettable characters and completely original. I think it is one of those rare novels that will still be enjoyed in twenty years time.

Kevin McCloud's latest book KEVIN MCCLOUD'S GRAND TOUR OF EUROPE, was always on a tight schedule with Weidenfeld ,originally planned to accompany the Channel 4 series that was txing in February. Consternation when this was brought forward to September! A coolheaded editor and an incredible author combined to produce what we think will be a stunning book that SHOULD be in the shops the day after the first episode of the Silver River production airs...the fastest piece of publishing in all my years as an agent!

Following the thrilling critical reception of Andy Mulligan's first childrens' novel RIBBLESTROP, Simon & Schuster UK have bought the sequel, RETURN TO RIBBLESTROP which will be published in early 2011. See his website for a taster of some of the new pupils who will be arriving in the spring term...Andy is hard at work on the film script of RIBBLESTROP.

JULY, 2009

HARRY PATCH, the last surviving soldier to serve in the trenches of the first world war, died yesterday at the age of 111. It has been a priviledge to represent him and the book he co-wrote with Richard Van Emden, THE LAST FIGHTING TOMMY. Harry was an unforgettable man, gentle and humorous. In honouring him, we should not forget that he did not remember his time as a soldier as anything but terrifying and tragic; war, he said, was not worth the loss of even a couple of lives. I hope that as many people as possible read his book and remember his message.
