 NOT GUILTY

The splendid Pitshanger Bookshop in Ealing hosted a wonderful second launch on Wednesday for Sue Elliott and Steve Humphries' superb book that accompanied the Channel 4 documentary. Only fifty years ago sex between men was a crime. These intimate testimonies of some exceptional but largely unknown characters give voice to previously untold stories of denial, deceit and subterfuge before the 1967act that de-criminalised sex between adult men. Sue is a wonderful reader and had the audience in tears. It's an important book and a powerful reminder of how hard-won freedoms can so easily be eroded in uncertain times.

BRILLANT BAKE OFF AND CONGRATULATIONS TO PRUE

What a triumph last night! It was so exciting to see the new series moved to Channel 4 and  Prue Leith looking so at home in the baking tent. She says it has just been a joy to be involved with; a wonderful happy atmosphere and the bakers a delight as well as brilliant. New publishing from Prue soon...

 A LOST CLASSIC REVIVED

Very early in my career as an agent I represented the remarkable memoir of an extraordinary woman, Janet White. in the early 1950s Janet defied the conventions of her gender and class and determined to spend her life working in solitary and beautiful places as a shepherd. Her book, THE SHEEP STELL was published twenty years ago by a small imprint which closed soon after publication but the book had wonderful reviews from Jenni Diski and Colin Thubron chose it as one of his Books of the Year.

Since her book came out there has of course been a whole new fashion for this kind of memoir - but hers was the first. Constable have now bought the rights to an updated version with a new introduction by Colin Thubron and it will be a lead title for them in March next year. Janet is now 87and still farming. It would make the most thrilling film as despite her love of solitude her beauty was a magnet and those attracted were not always entirely sane...
