....and the same mail delivered the copies of Richard Van Emden's utterly stunning book, also published next month. The history of WW1 told year by year in the words of the men who lived and died and using many previously unknown sources, along with previously unseen photographs taken by soldiers on and behind the front, this book deserves to outshine the many many books published to commemorate the outbreak of war in 1914. It's a superb production by Bloomsbury. Richard is the pre-eminent historian on WW1 and his many books have sold over half a million copies.

Despite years and years in the publishing business the thrill of holding that first early copy of a book one has worked on with the author never loses its magic. Today was a particularly good day as I received the first copy of Julian Mash's PORTOBELLO ROAD; LIVES OF A NEIGHBOURHOOD which celebrates the spirit of the iconic street close by my London office. Julian has found the most extraordinary people to interview - people who have been part of the cultural history of the last fifty years - and the book is launched at the Idler Academy which he manages on June 25th.

Harold's latest volume of memoir ' A LIFE IN THE YEAR' has just been delivered and is out on offer to publishers now. It follows his fortunes when in the year 1958 -1959 he was the youngest student at St Martins School of Art and discovered both his sexual identity and his professional future as a fashion artist (both hidden from his parents and one illegal at the time.) It is a marvellous book.

Jane Wood at Quercus has signed up Prue with a two book contract for a new family saga that follows the fortunes and misfortunes of an Anglo-Italian restaurant dynasty. The books will span the period 1940 - 1990 - a time which saw a revolution in the way we eat in this country. Prue's return to fiction after the success of her autobiography RELISH will delight her many fans.
