Publication of Vincent Thurkettle's WOOD FIRE HANDBOOK - absolutely ESSENTIAL for anyone who has an open fire or a woodburning stove in their life! There are not many books with 'handbook' in the title that one would want to read but this is a great blend of anecdote about wood lore/woodsmen and a life time of adventure together with hard fact. Vince is forrester and his book covers everything from choosing wood, seasoning, splitting, stacking to laying fires, getting them started, keeping them going, choosing wood for scent, building bonfires and campfires. There is a great video of him on Youtube.

The excitement of seeing the finished copy of a book long in gestation never dimishes. This has been a great week as I have the brand new book by KEVIN MCCLOUD - THE BEST OF GRAND DESIGNS (published today) and the stunning paperback editions of two wonderful memoirs - PRUE LEITH's RELISH and ROGER GARFITT'S THE HORSEMAN'S WORD.
Prue is of course a household name from her career as a cook and restaurater and latterly as a successful novelist and TV personality but she has turned her hand to non-fiction in this hugely entertaining and revealing autobiography.
Roger Garfitt is a well known poet and this is his first prose work. The hardback reviews were stellar and his memoir of his childhood, of his obsessive first love, wild adventures at Oxford in the 1960s and eventual breakdown and recovery is a book that deserves to become a classic. There are just a handful of books that convey the reality of feverish, intense adolescence as truthfully as this does and I urge anyone visiting this site to read it.

RIBBLESTROP FOREVER is in the shops - the final wild, brilliant childrens' book in this award winning trilogy. RIBBLESTROP was shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Books prize and RETURN TO RIBBLESTROP won the Guardian Childrens' fiction prize. The final volume is my favourite. All the established characters are here along with some great new ones and the dastardly Inspector Cuthbertson is back and ready for the final conflict...
These are books that will get any child of 10+ hooked and are especially enjoyed by boys who are usually reluctant readers.
Andy has been travelling in Europe - invited to give a week of talks to schools and librarians in Switzerland and to receive the Netherlands' most prestigious book award for TRASH which has now been translated into 23 languages. His latest, THE BOY WITH TWO HEADS is coming from David Fickling Books in May 2013.
